How to enroll in the California Soil Restoration Project
There is still time to include fields in the 2027 vintage of the California Soil Restoration Project (CSRP), but the window closes soon. Field and management information for this round is due October 16. (Fields that miss the deadline can enroll later and join a future vintage.)
Enrollment has four steps and growers can move through them quickly.
CSRP is run by OBC in partnership with Recover Ag. Growers can earn up to $100 per acre per year, depending on credit sales, for keeping living cover in their orchards and vineyards and limiting soil disturbance. There are two tracks: Soil Health Builder for growers new to cover, and Soil Health Trailblazer for growers who have kept cover for years. Our program page has more information.
Step 1: Express interest
We need to know you’re interested in the program. Fill out this short form with some very basic information so that we can help you move through the next steps.
Step 2: A short introductory call
We’ll reach out to set up a short informational call. We want to confirm we’re a good fit for each other and understand your operation and floor management practices. We also want to provide you with the opportunity to ask any questions you have about the program!
Step 3: Field and management details
We’ll then request detailed information for each field you plan to enroll. The required details include: field boundaries or maps, crop type, and floor management history. Recover Ag needs this information to design the soil sampling plan for your acreage, which can be submitted online via a combined form and spreadsheet. If any questions come up, we’re happy to walk through the process with you. In order to be included for the 2027 vintage, we need this information by October 16. Having seed receipts, field records, or past cost-share paperwork on hand can speed this step up.
There is no contract to sign for the initial acreage enrollment. That step will be handled when it comes time to sell your carbon credits.
Step 4: Soil sampling
The last step is baseline soil sampling on enrolled fields. Recover Ag will handle this process and combine these samples with satellite data to establish a baseline used to measure carbon change over time. Each grower will also receive a soil report after the sampling data has been analyzed. That report can be useful for fertility and management decisions, in addition to providing the soil carbon data.
After enrollment
Once sampling is complete, fields are enrolled and measurement begins. Recover Ag expects to issue the program's first credits in February 2027. Grower payments come from credit sales, so payment timing depends on when credits are sold.
